Earlier this week I had a discussion with a new jewelry designer about the importance of following trends. Someone at a gallery where her work is had commented that her work was not “trendy” and she was doubting her designs (even though they sell). I’ve designed (and sold most of) over 600 pieces in my first year and have been obsessively studying jewelry in galleries and small craft shows. I’ve seen massive metal necklaces that are so heavy I can’t imagine wearing them, and chinzy plastic that I prefer not to work with. But someone makes and sells all of these pieces and someone or even many people buy it it all. Sometimes I design something that I think is kind of ugly and then someone at a craft completely falls in love with it and that affirms both that I’m not designing for myself, and my mission to help women feel more authentically expressed and empowered…in whatever form that comes (to a certain degree at least.)
I’m not very good at staying inside any kind of box, but I do think the Pantone colors are fun and gorgeous. Color is a powerful healer and I even wonder if the Pantone colors of the year are the ones we need for the healing we are currently working on collectively. We love them and are drawn to them. So, I am focusing on how to use them in my own designs, which I infuse with healing energy and customize with different intentions.
In this year I have played around with the popular Pantone “Emerald” green and used emeralds to design a few pieces (see photo on right or the necklace here.)
“Dazzling Blue” is my favorite from the Spring 2014 Pantone color palette. The sketch of the dress with this color in the Pantone report by Sachin and Babi took my breath away. The mega-healing gemstone, lapis lazuli, is similar to, if not exactly this color. (And I just bought a dress this color too!)
My second favorite color is “Celosia Orange.” I look forward to playing with “Placid Blue,” and this rich orange and bringing the “Cayenne” into my designs.
